Plan a Picnic

27th Jul 2018 Herefordshire Ross on Wye

The picnic has long been part of the British imagination. Tony Willis first coined the term ‘picnic’ in 1692 to describe a group of people dining in a restaurant who brought their own wine, now its used to describe those who have taken their company and wine outside.

The National Trust has come up with a list of places

perfect for a picnic in Herefordshire

1. Berrington Hall

Berrington Hall is set on sweeping grounds, with a stunning lake and views of wooded parkland and countryside. A perfect spot. The impressive historic house, walled gardens and other local species visiting make this an idyllic place to picnic.

2.  Brockhampton Estate.

Brockhampton Estate main boast Wikipedia tells us that “… is Lower Brockhampton, a timber-framed manor house that dates back to the late 14th century”. But for picnickers, the real appeal is the surrounding farm, park and woodland. After your meal enjoy a walk, and you can even take your four-legged friends.

3. Croft Castle

Whether or not inhabitants of this ancient castle and chapel have enjoyed picnicking on 1,500 acres of woodland, farmland and parkland need not detain us. It is here for the taking. The National Trust site states, “With five way-marked walks, an Iron Age hillfort, rows of ancient trees and a ‘Picturesque’ Fishpool Valley, there are plenty of spots in our parkland for you to escape to.”

4.  The Weir Garden

Finally, if you want to get by a river, then head to the Weir Garden. 10 acres nestled alongside the River Wye its a perfectly enchanting place for a summer picnic. But be sure to observe the many different species of birds and insects!

With the weather so good, get lunch packed and get outdoors this summer.
