Security measures you should expect from a storage facility

You might think a secure storage facility is hard to find. You might think your beloved items will be safer in your home, garage or rickety garden shed. However, the security measures you should expect from a storage facility are quite tight. The standard is high, because we want you to feel like your possessions are safe in our care.

The standard for self-storage security facilities is now so high that your belongings are safer there than they would be left in your house. But what are the security measures you should expect from a secure storage facility?  Let us discuss the main security measures you should look for that every storage facility should have.

What is a secure storage unit made out of?

One of the most important yet often overlooked security measures is how the units themselves are constructed. Depending on the materials used and construction methods, this affects the structural integrity of the unit. After all, weaker materials are easier to break into and damage.

At Now Storage, all our units are made from solid steel for the utmost self-storage security. We inspect our units regularly and perform immediate maintenance when required. They also have a solid hardwood floor and ventilation as standard, keeping your belongings safe and secure from both burglars and the Great British weather.

Does self-storage have CCTV?

When choosing a self-storage unit, you should always make sure it is covered by video surveillance. Self-storage CCTV should not only be trained on the units themselves, but it should also record the entry and exit ways to the facility, ensuring your possessions are securely stored on the premises at all times.

In doing so, whoever reviews the footage should be able to notice a potential crime before it occurs. If, unfortunately, a theft occurs before it was able to be prevented, the CCTV footage will help the authorities to catch the perpetrators as quickly as possible.

How are secure self-storage units locked?

All storage units should always be secured with a padlock. A padlock ensures anyone who shouldn’t have access to your storage unit doesn’t have access to your storage unit.

Most storage facilities require you to bring your own padlock, and the best ones are always more expensive. That’s why at Now Storage, we will provide you with a padlock and key at no extra cost.

You will also be the sole key holder, so you can rest assured that no one else will have access to your storage unit.

Security

In addition to (or instead of) padlocks, a secure storage facility should have strong locking mechanisms. Locking systems at storage facilities may be either manual or digital – so you may need a key or to input a key code. In fact, some storage facilities are even keyless nowadays thanks to innovations in technology.

We take self-storage security very seriously here at Now Storage, providing secure access control. As we have multiple locations, our offerings may vary slightly depending on the storage location you choose. Just get in touch with us to find out about the access solutions we have in place at your local storage facility.

How can they restrict unauthorised access?

There are many ways that a storage facility can restrict access – from a manned entry point to a controlled car park, a fenced boundary, clear opening and closing times, or entry via a keycode, to give a few examples. Restricting access to every storage facility is essential, as it will ensure that only authorised visitors can gain access to the site.

All our storage facilities have a secured boundary to reduce unauthorised access. You will also be the sole keyholder to your storage unit, which we will provide to you on move-in day once you have confirmed your identity.

Self-storage insurance

Another of the most important security measures you should expect from a reliable secure storage facility is insurance. Many – if not all – storage facilities will require you to have insurance in order to store your items. Some places (like us here at Now Storage!) will offer in house insurance bundles along with your unit. This protects both the storage company and, more importantly, you in the event of any damage. In order to use any of our storage facilities at Now Storage, you must have insurance.

Don’t worry, though, as we offer insurance in-house starting from £2 a week. If your business or home insurance covers it, you just need to give us your policy number. In extenuating circumstances, we can waive the need for insurance, after you have signed a document agreeing to sole responsibility for the items stored with us.
